1. 如果置于句首的not only… but also僅連接兩個并列詞語（成分），不可用倒裝結構，如：

Not only the students but also the teacher was invited.

不僅學生們被邀請，而且那位教師也被邀請了。（連接主語）

Not only the students but also their teacher is enjoying the film. 不僅學生們在欣賞這部影片，他們的老師也在欣賞這部影片。（連接主語）

Not only you but also I am fond of music.不但是你，而且我也喜歡音樂。（連接主語）

The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs.

英國人和美國人不但語言相同，而且有很多相同的風俗習慣。（連接謂語動詞）

The problem for the recipient was trying to guess not only who the sender was, but also what his secret feelings might be.

收信人不僅要盡力猜出是誰的，還要推測寄信人內心有什么想法。（連接賓語）

Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active.

淺色和鮮艷的顏色不但使人看了高興，也會使人更加活潑。（連接賓語補足語）

Shakespeare was not only a writer but (also) an actor。

莎士比亞不僅是一位劇作家，而且是一位演員。（連接表語）

Man has become master not only of the sky but also of the space.

He didn’t let us off the hook until we had proved not only that we knew what an organism was but also that we had the fortitude to stand up for the truth.

2.為了強調和加強語氣，只有當Not only… but also連接兩個分句，而且 not only位于句首時才在第一個分句用倒裝結構。例如：

Not only are mothers not paid but also most of their boring or difficult work is unnoticed.

母親們不僅得不到報酬，而且所干的乏味艱辛的活兒也很少被留意。

Not only is he a teacher, but he is also a poet.

他不僅是一位教師，而且是一位詩人。

Not only did he speak more correctly, but he spoke more easily.

不僅他講得更正確，也講得更不費勁了。

Not only did he refuse the gift,he also severely criticized the sender.

他沒有收下禮物，還狠狠批評了送禮的人。

Not only can he speak Chinese well, but also he can speak French fluently.他不但漢語說得好，而且法語說得也很流利。

Not only does he like math, but also he likes English. 他不但喜歡數學，而且喜歡英語。

Not only has he a first-class brain but also he is a tremendously hard worker.

他不僅有著頭等聰明的腦子，而且工作很能吃苦。

Not only has the activity increased public awareness of world hunger，but raised a lot of money for the poor children.

not only...but also的倒裝用法一：連接兩個不同形式的謂語

如果用not only...but also對某一個人或者事物進行兩次具有遞進關系的描述，但兩次描述的謂語形式不同，即用“be+表語”構成一個性質（狀態）的描述，用行為動詞構成一個動作（行為）的描述，這時候就必須使用倒裝結構。

原因是兩個句子中的謂語形式不同的情況下，我們就應該看做是對兩個分句進行遞進連接，所以not only和but also分別置于兩個分句句首，第一個分句引起部分倒裝。例如：

原文：她不僅僅多思善慮，而且總是舍己為人。

譯文一：She is not only thoughtful, but (also) sacrifices her own interests for those of others. (誤)

譯文二：Not only is she thoughtful, but (also) she sacrifices her own interests for those of others. (正)

分析：原文中有兩個謂語描述，一個是性質（狀態）的“be thoughtful”，另一個是行為（動作）的“sacrifice”。

如果按照譯文一的方法寫出來，not only 放在第一個分句的be動詞后，而but also卻放在后一個分句的主語后面，這就明顯地造成兩個連詞連接的成分不對等，于是應該按照譯文二的方式表達，即連接兩個分句，not only和but also分別置于分句句首，前面的分句構成部分倒裝。

not only...but also的倒裝用法二：連接兩個相同形式的謂語

如果是對某一個人或事物進行兩次具有遞進關系的描述，而且描述的謂語形式相同，即同為“be+表語”構成性質（狀態）的描述，或同為行為動詞構成動作（行為）的描述，這時候不是必須使用倒裝結構，但也可以使用倒裝結構來增強表意的強度。請看實例：

原文：她不僅僅多思善慮，而且心胸開闊。

譯文一：She is not only thoughtful, but (also) broad-minded.

譯文二：Not only is she thoughtful, but (also) she is broad-minded.

分析：原文中是兩次用“be+表語”構成性質（狀態）的描述，所以譯文一（不倒裝）是完全可以的，這時候可以共用be動詞，即not only...but also連接兩個表語即可。但是如果作者需要加強表達的語氣，就可以用譯文二的形式，用not only...but also的倒裝用法引出兩個分句。

同樣的道理，如果是not only...but also連接兩個由行為動詞構成的動作（行為）的描述，也有兩種方式。請看例句：

原文：他不僅僅指正了我的錯誤，還指導了我如果避免這些錯誤。

譯文一：He not only corrected my mistake, but (also) instructed me to avoid repeating them.

譯文二：Not only did he correct my mistake, but (also) he instructed me to avoid repeating them.

Not only...but also的倒裝用法非常重要。學習者在使用not only...but also的倒裝用法時，務必注意“一個條件”：即并列謂語；“兩個可能”：一是兩種不同形式的謂語（必須倒裝），二是兩個相同形式的謂語（在表示強調語氣時可以倒裝）。
